Umunna: Attacking employees’ rights is no substitute for an effective growth strategy

Chuka Umunna MP, Labour’s Shadow Business Secretary, commenting on the leaked Beecroft Report today, said:

“With unemployment at a 17 year high of 2.57 million, it is extraordinary that the Government is exploring ways of making it easier to fire people, when they should be focusing on how to make it easier for businesses to hire people. Labour’s five point plan for jobs and growth includes tax breaks for small businesses who take on extra workers.

“Growth has flat lined not because of the unfair dismissal regime but because the Government is cutting spending and raising taxes too far and too fast, hitting business confidence and choking off growth. Attacking employees’ rights is no substitute for an effective growth strategy.

“We are not opposed to reforming the way in which employment tribunals work for the sake of both employees and employers, but the idea of abolishing unfair dismissal altogether is not acceptable and shows just how out of date and out of touch ministers are.”
