Local MP takes Diane Abbott to see local action to combat alcoholism

Lambeth MP Chuka Umunna was joined by Labour’s Shadow Minister for Public Health, Diane Abbott, on a visit to the Mount Carmel treatment centre near his South London constituency.

Mount Carmel has over 25 years’ experience of providing abstinence based 12 step treatment for both men and women who are seeking recovery from alcoholism.

The organisation runs structured three and six month programmes consisting of intensive group therapy and one-to-one counselling sessions, designed to help individuals seeking recovery from alcoholism.

Specific groups for life skills, gender, food, literacy, yoga and meditation are included and the organisation’s clients have an individualized care plan devised with a keyworker.

Chuka Umunna said that Alcoholism has a ‘corrosive effect’ on local communities, and that those affected should be helped to improve their lives.

Commenting, Chuka Umunna MP said:

“It’s great that Diane could come to our area to see the hard work being done in our area to combat alcohol addiction. Alcoholism has a corrosive effect on our communities and many people will know at least one person whose life has been mired by this addiction.

The toll addiction has on individuals and our communities is incredibly serious and we must make sure those affected can be helped to improve their lives.”
