Update: People’s Question Time on Proposed Tesco Express

Chuka Umunna MP chaired a People’s Question Time last Friday to discuss the plans for a Tesco Express at 144 Brixton Hill – the site of the former George IV/Music Bar. Councillor Florence Nosegbe, Tesco Representative Matt Magee,  and Andrew Child from the SaveGeorgeIV campaign all very kindly agreed to sit on the Panel for the event.

Action Points from the People’s Question Time:

  • Summing up the consensus of the meeting, and also the views expressed in the correspondence he has received on this issue, Chuka Umunna agreed that there was little support or need for another chain express supermarket in the locality. Mr Umunna confirmed he will be writing to the Tesco Chief Executive to make clear the strong views expressed at the meeting. Any response received from Tesco will be published on this website.
  • Concerns were raised at the meeting about whether large UK Supermarket chains paid the living wage, and if not, what the reasons for this were for. It was agreed that Chuka Umunna would write to the Chief Executives of these supermarkets to raise this issue with them, and that any response received would be published on this website.
  • It was agreed that a link to the details of the planning application rejected by Lambeth would be published on this site (see below).
  • It was agreed that Lambeth’s Policy 27, concerning the loss of public houses, would be published on this website (see below).
  • It was agreed that links to research referred to in the meeting, commissioned by Tesco and produced by the University of Southampton, concerning the impact that Supermakets have on footfall in the locality in which they were situated, would be published on this website (see below).
  • It was agreed that contact details for the Save George IV Campaign would be published on this website for those who wished to contact the campaign group (see below).
