With Southern Rail, run by Govia Thameslink (GTR), repeatedly failing to meet their targets for punctuality and service Chuka spoke out in a Westminster Hall debate in the House of Commons on this and called for action.
Chuka said: “GTR is providing a joke of a service. The have the worst record on cancellation and significant lateness by some margin ahead of any other train operator.
“I have heard from many constituents who have been made repeatedly late for work and lost their jobs and student who have been made late and caused undue stress during their exams.
“They may be having to operate on old and outdated infrastructure, but so are many other operators. It is no excuse, and it is simply not good enough.”
Chuka is calling for the Southern Rail suburban network, run by Govia Thameslink to be brought under Transport for London control immediately, rather than waiting for the Govia Thameslink franchise to be renewed. Please support this call by signing the petition here.
A long term solution to solve this problem is for Streatham to be part of Crossrail 2. This would alleviate pressure on the Southern rail network and at Streatham Common station, the sixth busiest station on the Southern network. It would also reduce congestion on the A23 which is becoming increasingly congested and a hot spot for accidents.
