Today Chuka launched a new campaign calling on the government to introduce a fairer system of proportional representation for all future UK General Elections.
Commenting on the launch of the campaign, Chuka said: “The current First Past the Post system of electing MPs is no longer fit for purpose. I believe that no matter who you vote for, whether you vote Labour or not, whether you live in a safe seat or not, your vote should count in the same way and the share of seats a party gets should closely reflect the share of votes given to them by the people. Whilst proportional representation electoral systems are used to elect the Scottish Parliament, Welsh Assembly, Northern Ireland Assembly, and the London Assembly, UK General Elections are still carried out under First Past the Post.
Recent polling also suggests a significant majority of the public support moving to a more proportional system of electing MPs.
Chuka has tabled an Early Day Motion in Parliament calling on the Government to bring forward legislation to introduce proportional representation for UK General Elections.
